CATL announced a landmark three-year deal on April 27, 2026, to supply HyperStrong with 60 GWh of sodium-ion batteries for energy storage systems. This is the largest such order worldwide and equates to half of CATL's 2025 energy storage output of 121 GWh.

The agreement encompasses collaboration on technology development, product integration, and project execution, fostering innovation in sodium-ion applications.

CATL overcame critical manufacturing challenges, including foaming in hard carbon production lines and humidity control. Key solutions involved angstrom-scale pore adjustments and advanced surface modifications, which significantly improved energy density.

These batteries excel in wide temperature tolerance, high thermal cycle performance, low heat generation, minimal cell swelling, and superior safety. For long-duration storage at EV charging stations, they reduce auxiliary power needs, simplify system complexity, and align with lithium-ion dimensions for seamless supply chain integration and cost-effective deployment.

The deal builds on a November 2025 framework where HyperStrong committed to at least 200 GWh of cells through 2028, within a broader 2026-2035 pact. With over 40 GWh installed globally, HyperStrong expects enhanced supply stability for energy storage systems powering EV infrastructure.
