Rising fuel prices in March, fueled by the Middle East conflict, boosted demand for BEVs and PHEVs among European consumers, reversing a slowdown from January and February. Q1 2026 new car registrations hit 3,521,110 units, up 4.1% year-over-year, with BEVs claiming a 20.6% share and PHEVs 10.1%.
Europe's new car market kicked off 2026 with a solid 4.1% increase, registering 3,521,110 vehicles in the first quarter. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) led the charge, surging 26.2% to 723,704 units and capturing a 20.6% market share. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) weren't far behind, climbing 32.4% to 267,906 units for a 10.1% share. This electrified momentum outpaced the overall market, fueled by rising fuel prices in March amid the Middle East conflict, which reversed a brief slowdown in January and February.
Gasoline-powered cars saw registrations drop 17% to 791,588 units, holding a 22.5% share. This brought the gap with BEVs down to less than two percentage points and under 70,000 units—a stark contrast to over 10 points a year ago.
In the EU specifically, BEV registrations jumped 32.5% to claim a 19.4% share. Conventional hybrids, including mild-hybrids, dominated with 1,355,117 units and a leading 38.5% share, up 11.4%. Diesel continued its decline, falling 16.4% to 233,151 units (6.6% share), while alternative fuels like GPL, natural gas, and hydrogen plummeted 31.9% to 62,851 units (1.8% share).
If current trends persist, 2026 could mark a historic milestone, with BEV sales surpassing gasoline cars in Europe for the first time.
