Lucid Motors Partners with Basemark for Advanced AR Head-Up Display in Gravity SUV

Lucid Motors has partnered with Finnish firm Basemark to deliver an advanced AR head-up display for its Gravity SUV, addressing delays from 2023 promises. The 34-inch 6K…

Finnish software company Basemark announced on Thursday that Lucid Motors has chosen it to create the augmented reality (AR) head-up display (HUD) for the Gravity SUV, Lucid's second vehicle. Unveiled over two years ago, this anticipated feature is now progressing toward full implementation for Gravity owners. Basemark will leverage its Rocksolid Studio tools to realize Lucid's proprietary AR HUD design. Lucid managed the hardware, features, user experience, and interface in-house, while Basemark focuses on the software for a seamless AR integration. For Gravity drivers, the AR HUD will overlay navigation instructions and safety warnings on the windshield, minimizing distractions and keeping eyes on the road. Those who opted for the Technology Package—featuring the AR HUD, dynamic ambient lighting, Sanctuary Mode, and 120V outlets—will receive these upgrades via over-the-air software updates post-purchase. Lucid initially demonstrated the laser-powered AR HUD at the Gravity's 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show reveal and in the November 2024 configurator, positioning it as a cornerstone of the Clearview Cockpit with a 34-inch 6K curved OLED display. Marketing materials showed projections of speed, directions, and augmented road views in the driver's field of vision. Deliveries of the Gravity began in 2025, with Technology Package vehicles including a standard HUD for speed, limits, and basic navigation arrows, which owners have praised on forums for enhancing road focus. However, sophisticated AR elements like road overlays, ADAS visualizations, and holographics are still forthcoming. Lucid showcased prototypes with Envisics and Harman at the September Vehicle Displays and Interfaces Conference in Detroit. Envisics, known for holographic HUDs in GM's Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq, employs laser-illuminated spatial light modulators to create dual-depth images: a near field for vehicle data and a far field for AR elements such as navigation and alerts that boost situational awareness. Basemark's Rocksolid Studio ensures real-time AR rendering by integrating with the vehicle's sensors. These enhancements for Gravity owners promise safer, distraction-free driving, including imminent hands-free highway capabilities beyond standard assists, delivered remotely without dealer visits. Recently, the UX 3.5 update introduced Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the SUV, features standard on the Air model but missing at Gravity's debut. Interim CEO Marc Winterhoff stated at Bank of America's 2026 Global Automotive Summit that hands-free driving is imminent: 'We are right now at what we call L2+, which basically means hands-free driving in the Air, and in a few weeks from now, also in the Gravity.' Initially slated for 2025, it launched for Air owners in July 2025 after delays, with Gravity's rollout following later that year but postponed again. Basemark CEO Tero Sarkkinen commented: 'We are extremely proud to have been chosen by Lucid to help them develop their new AR HUD experience for the amazing Lucid Gravity.' Future updates will introduce more features, providing ongoing value through improved routing accuracy and user convenience via in-house and collaborative software developments.
