Mercedes-AMG Ends Era of Four-Cylinder C 63, Teases Inline-Six C 53 Replacement

Mercedes-AMG has officially confirmed the discontinuation of the four-cylinder C 63 S E Performance, which replaced the beloved 4.0-liter V8 biturbo with a plug-in hybrid setup. This change drew significant criticism from dedicated fans and led to sales far short of projections. In its place, the brand is introducing the C 53 as the flagship high-performance variant of the C-Class, following a similar strategy to the current E-Class lineup.

Test prototypes spotted on public roads reveal that the new C 53 will feature a turbocharged inline-six engine combined with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, sharing its powertrain with the CLE 53 and abandoning the plug-in hybrid configuration altogether. Expectations point to power outputs evolving from the CLE 53's 449 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque, though even with potential increases, it won't match the outgoing C 63's 680 horsepower. Mercedes-AMG anticipates that enhancements in engine responsiveness, acoustic quality, and power delivery will more than compensate for the reduced figures.

By removing the electric motor, its two-speed transmission, and the 6.1-kWh battery, the C 53 should achieve a lighter weight than the C 63's 2,165 kg—potentially around the CLE 53's 2,000 kg—leading to better performance balance and handling characteristics. As the sole high-performance C-Class offering, the C 53 will prioritize driving enjoyment over sheer specifications.

Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz's 2026 lineup includes nearly 20 new vehicles, updates, and a refreshed V8 engine designed for greater emotional appeal and higher-revving character, based on customer preferences for more engaging sounds and mechanics. The 2026 S-Class has already introduced an advanced version of the M177 biturbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, paving the way for its use in other models, possibly including an extreme CLE variant reminiscent of a Black Series.

The spied prototypes also hint at an upcoming facelift for the standard C-Class, expected this spring, with a revised front-end design incorporating the brand's star motif in the lighting signature and updated bumpers. The cabin layout remains familiar, with its horizontal instrument cluster and vertical infotainment screen. While regular C-Class models will debut in spring, the C 53 is projected to arrive later, with its official unveiling targeted before the end of 2026.
