MG Motor, the storied British marque founded in 1924 and acquired by China's SAIC Motor in 2007, has crossed a significant threshold with over one million vehicles sold cumulatively in Europe as of last week. This achievement positions it as the first Chinese automaker to reach this mark on the continent.

The brand re-entered the UK market in 2011 and now operates across 34 European nations through a network of more than 1,300 dealer partners. The UK remains its top performer, with 386,000 units sold.

Electric vehicles have played a major role in MG's success, accounting for 317,000 of the total sales. This includes more than 100,000 in the UK since the launch of the MG4 EV hatchback and its affordable Urban edition. The MG ZS crossover SUV stands out as the brand's European bestseller, with 424,000 units sold in petrol and hybrid configurations.

Guy Pigounakis, commercial director for MG in Britain, noted how the company's legacy shapes its future path. He credited a diverse portfolio and proactive adoption of hybrid and electric innovations for its revival.

This progress comes amid challenges, as SAIC faces the highest EU tariffs at 45.3% on its electric vehicles. These were imposed in late 2024 following an anti-subsidy inquiry in which the firm was deemed insufficiently cooperative—the steepest levy among Chinese producers.
