Skoda Superb Launches Enhanced Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain

Skoda's flagship Superb, a plug-in hybrid pioneer since 2019, debuts a 272-hp upgrade with a 177-hp 1.5 TSI engine, 115-hp electric motor, and 25.7 kWh battery for 400 N…

The Skoda Superb has long served as the flagship model for the Czech manufacturer, continuing to lead in hybrid innovation. It was the first to introduce a plug-in hybrid setup in 2019, and the current version debuts an upgraded system that delivers 272 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque—figures matching powertrains in other Volkswagen Group vehicles like the Tiguan and CUPRA Formentor. Despite the increased output, the mechanical foundation stays the same, with the 1.5 TSI gasoline engine now tuned to 177 hp (a 27 hp gain over the previous version) paired to an 85 kW (115 hp) electric motor and the unchanged 25.7 kWh battery. Charging specs remain identical, offering up to 11 kW on AC and 50 kW on DC, with a full 10-80% charge possible in just 26 minutes using DC. Performance benefits significantly, as the sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds and tops out at 225 km/h. Although the all-electric range hasn't been detailed, it's expected to surpass 100 km under WLTP conditions, improving on the prior model's up to 140 km depending on the variant. This new 272 hp plug-in hybrid is exclusive to the Superb sedan in the higher Sportline and Laurin & Klement trims, while the 204 hp version continues for the Selection trim and the estate body style. Skoda hasn't revealed pricing yet, but for context, the current 204 hp Sportline starts at €54,526 and the Laurin & Klement at €55,802, pointing to a modest premium for the upgraded power.
